A hunchedbacked jester with an obsessive love for his daughter. A duke with an eye for every lady but a passion for only one. An assassin who has no care who his victims are provided he gets his fee. After its first performance at Venice's great opera house in 1851, Rigoletto was a hit the length and breadth of Europe. Now this thrilling Hinckley festival premiere gives you the chance to discover just what all the fuss was about.
AT LONG LAST Stanley Opera are bringing what many believe to be Verdi’s greatest opera to the Concordia Theatre for four performances in April. This stunning opera with its combination of thrilling music and engrossing action never fails to excite audiences. Rigoletto has more great arias, duets, ensembles and chrous numbers packed into just two hours of music than almost any other opera written and, with its spin-tingling story, it is rightly regarded as one of the best of all great chorus operas.
Based on the play by Victor Hugo (author of Les Misérables.), Rigoletto tells the tale of a jester who, employed by the womanizing Duke of Mantua to mock all and sundry at court, makes too many enemies and pays a terrible price. A dreadful curse placed on Rigoletto starts to exert its power and when his beloved daughter Gilda is abducted by his master’s courtiers, Rigoletto’s thoughts turn obsessively to revenge, with awful and unforseen consequences.
